Work Statement:


Cars can and should be an extension of who we are. A reflection of our desire to enjoy our time on this earth. 


Mazda embraces this mentality, with the proof being their KODO design language (Soul of Motion). 


As said by Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s head of design— 

"We never start by designing a car. We create objects with different forms and explore how these forms move people’s hearts." 


This innately human approach is felt immediately in the presence of Mazda’s current era. Each car is an acknowledgment of people, their personalities, and ambitions. The design feels thoughtful. 


Focused on luxury, performance, and form— the CX-5 gives life to all three in a minimalist package that’s unprecedented for its class. The bow is tied with a mobile app that enables the vehicle’s symbiosis with your day to day. 


In this piece— overhead light accentuates the CX-5’s strong visual details while frenetic movement pays respect to its surprising pace and energy. The closing sequence returns you to the car’s natural state of elegance. 


The app highlights are based on real-world experiences. From monitoring fuel on the fly, to beating the weather with remote start, and even locking the car from our restaurant table after a helpful alert. It’s a companion to the vehicle that allows you to stay focused on your daily life— and its many turns. 


The CX-5 pays tribute to the human experience and our desire to excel within it.

Why make the CX-5 spec ad?:

 

What’s the best way to demonstrate your love for products?

I figured it was to tell a story about one that enhances your daily life.

The Mazda CX-5 quickly became the pick and a spec ad felt like the best way to tell that story.

Not having previously made a commercial, or really worked in video, this was an exciting challenge. 

Most of the tools and software used in the ad were learned for the sake of creating it. 

Any tool I didn’t already own- a workaround was found, no rentals/purchases.
